Optimize Your HRV (Heart Rate Variability)
HRV (Heart Rate Variability) is one of the most powerful indicators of your overall nervous system health, recovery, resilience, metabolism, and stress load.
HRV is the variance in time between the beats of your heart. You want this number to be higher rather than lower. It is a function of your heart rate, but it actually originates from your nervous system. Your autonomic nervous system has two branches – parasympathetic (think p for peace, rest and digest) and sympathetic (think s for stress, fight or flight).
If your nervous system is balanced, your heart is constantly being slowed down by your parasympathetic system and sped up by your sympathetic system. This causes a fluctuation in your heart rate correlating with a higher HRV, which is good.
A high HRV suggests your body is recovering well, adapting to stress, and operating from a balanced nervous system (hello parasympathetic). A lower HRV (especially chronically low) may indicate a reduced ability of the body to adapt to stress, correlating with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and greater morbidity.
A chronically low HRV may reflect:
⚡ Chronic stress, emotional, mental and psychological stressors
⚡ Poor sleep quality – irregular sleep schedule
⚡ Dehydration, poor nutrition, metabolic strain,
⚡ Inflammation
⚡ Alcohol + sugar before bed
⚡ Overtraining, too-intense workouts and poor recovery
⚡ Hormonal changes (especially in midlife + menopause)
⚡ Irregular sleep schedule
However, what is a good HRV varies widely per person, depending on age, sex, fitness, lifestyle, and genetics. However, if your HRV is chronically low for you, HRV is changeable.
Small daily shifts → big improvements over time.
Ways to improve HRV naturally:
🌿 Consistent bedtime + wake times
🌿 Breathwork + meditation, stress management
🌿 Vagus-nerve activation, yoga, stretching, calming the nervous system
🌿 Adequate hydration + balanced nutrition, avoiding alcohol and stimulants late in the day
🌿 Moderate, not extreme, training or physical activity
🌿 Reducing late-night alcohol & stimulants
🌿 Protecting peace like it’s medicine
Your body is always communicating — HRV just gives you the language to understand it.
